A Sad Loss, A Reinvention

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I was away when it happened. And now, much has changed since my old Trailer Park home got swept away in the furies of Hurricane Cletus-Darrel-Johnboy. (Hey…who says hurricanes can have hyphenated names?) It was sudden. It came without warning. The shining legacy of what was taken in the storm still burns in my heart.

When the dust settled, all I found in the rubble was our trusty old microphone. As I shed a tear over the wreckage, the voice of my dear old Mama rang in my ears, sayin “boy, don’t you let a good thang dah!! Or so help me I’ll come back from my watery grave with an ass-whoopin so hard it’ll smite you into 2010!” In the wind, I could swear I heard my 11th cousin thrice removed Richard giggling…and Mama smackin him once, prompting an “owwww, Mawmaa, dang!”

Then the air went still. Shaken by the thunderous boom of her soft and kindly voice…and having absolutely no desire to see 2010 quite yet…I called up the general manager of Remingtons and offered my hand in keeping the karaoke faith alive. He and the owner graciously accepted. They’d even already bought all new equipment.

I arrived last Wednesday night to a mess of old wires and new boxes, none of which had labels, nor notes. It wasn’t until midnight that I rest my weary head…having repaired our old home into something that would function once again. I’ll be back again this week to tweak it just a bit more.

This weekend, I inaugurated my hosting at Remingtons Truck Stop Karaoke with bartender Michael Fratz. I will be doing this every Friday and Saturday going forward, 10pm-3am…save a few scattered weekends when I won’t be able to make it due to prior commitments. This weekend went quite well for a first-run. And we’re brewing up some GREAT ideas for the coming weeks. We hope to see you out. Thanks to everyone who has returned to pick up the pieces.

Kisses!!
A-Ron

Birthday Post Mortem

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Special thanks to everyone who came out last night and made Devin & I’s birthday party at The Space a reality. Thank you to all of the artists and raffle-buyers. We all raised $789 for Everybody Wins, a charity for children’s literacy in Washington, DC.

In an odd twist of fate, I ended up winning the raffle for Secret Worm’s (Sean Welker’s) painting. That makes two pieces now of his that I own. I’m ecstatic. Trust me when I say that the shock was equal on both sides when that happened.

I was also gifted a print from Jeanette Herrera early in the evening. She would later put another 9 prints of hers on the raffle block after the main 6 paintings were given away. That very special surprise was appreciated by all of the additional winners. In all, 15 people received the gift of art last night for their contributions to the raffle.

Pictures and video from the party, including a list of the winners…are coming soon!

I woke up this morning with the worst hangover and it was worth every penny.

The Last Day In The 20’s

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Tomorrow is my thirtieth birthday.  (Well…thirty one if you count the time I popped out into the world.  Most people forget about that 0 birthday.)  As I approach tomorrow, I remember that I was born on a Wednesday in California at 9pm on the dot.  Sometimes I joke that this means I have two birthdays because September 20th at 9pm in California…is September 21st at 12am in Washington DC.  Too bad I can’t just hop a private jet and make the day last!!

It’s funny how we annually celebrate certain things…almost as if it’s an elaborate reminder.  We celebrate the day we were born…when our relatives were born….  We celebrate starts to relationships on their anniversary.  Wedding anniversarys.  The day someone quit drinking or smoking.  The day someone lost the weight they aimed to lose.  The day a drug addict went sober.

On the other hand, we also use reminders in a pretty morbid way, regardless of the purpose they suit.  The anniversary of someone’s passing.  A major world event where lots of people die.  The assassination of a political figure.  The murder of a celebrity.  The suicide of a rock star.  But I guess it all depends on who you are.  I can barely keep dates straight myself.  I am pretty thankful for electronic calendars.

Let’s try to jot down thirty things I have learned about myself and the world, shall we?

0)    Naked is the first natural state.  Have fun with it.
1)    We can’t prevent what we can’t predict.
2)    Your boss is your boss, not your buddy.
3)    Someone’s job title doesn’t necessarily relfect on them as a person.
4)    Don’t be mean.
5)    It’s okay to cry.
6)    You can tell more from a kiss than you can from a look.
7)    The sharp-dressed man might be hiding from a lack of confidence.
8)    Believe nothing that you read and only half of what you see.
9)    If two people see it…it’s real.
10)    When it rains…something good happens.
11)    You’re here once.  Go out with a bang.
12)    Sing in the shower.  Even if you don’t know the words.
13)    Not everyone is going to like you. Don’t worry. That’s their problem, not yours.
14)    If you’re sick, say so and stay in bed.
15)    Intrinsic value is good, but within reason. Know when to throw it away.
16)    Know when to walk away….know when to run.
17)    There are other planes.
18)    Love isn’t done on purpose.  Hate is.
19)    Beauty is all around you, but to see it you first have to find the beauty in yourself.  It’s there.
20)    Email addresses are like keys.  It’d be nice to have just one.
21)    Money is there to be spent.
22)    Look down sometimes.  There might be money on the ground.
23)    People are people.  Some are monstrous, others are divine.  But they are still just people.
24)    Avoiding negativity keeps you sane.
25)    Fight fire with fire.
26)    One’s feelings are their own to have, and never the fault of another.
27)    Strike a pose.  There’s nothing to it.
28)    Hero worship shows a lack of capacity for independent thought.
29)    Your family is always there.
30)    The phone works two ways.

I could say a lot more.  And I probably will.  Any day now I’ll start reminiscing about things I would never have dreamed to write down.  But as I am getting older, I am becoming less ashamed of myself for some of the experiences I have had.  I’m looking at things in a much more mature light than I ever have.  And it’s not because I’m turning thirty.  I just surround myself with mature people and I’ve learned a lot about myself in the process…about my capacity to make the right choices and avoid utter disaster.  I would wish the same for all of my friends.

I think my birthday gift to myself is probably going to be a nice shiny and new iPod.  But let’s worry about getting Saturday’s party out of the way first, shall we?

Sep 20 Approaches

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Here are shown the 6 canvases that will soon become 6 works of art by 6 local artists on September 20!  The works will be raffled off, all proceeds going to benefit “Everybody Wins” for children’s literacy in Washington, DC.

You’ll see that the plastic bag I was given to carry these suckers back to the office broke….  I am so totally NOT dragging these suckers on the subway with me today.  We’ll have to just pick them up later.

If you’re around on Saturday night and want to join in the fun, buy a few raffle tickets…then Devin Toporek and I invite you to join us in celebrating our 30th birthdays at The Space, on 9th & N NW, 7-11pm.  CLICK THE FLYER ON THE RIGHT FOR FULL INFO!!

It’s Tiiiiime….

‘Genius’ Takes The Wheel (iTunes8)

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

If you haven’t subjected your multi-million track library to the throes of iTunes 8, then do it NOW.  And when you do, activate the Genius feature and contribute to the erasure of all DJ’s across the world.

I kid on the DJ part…or do I?  ;)   Picture the ability to think of a song you know will set that mood.  Do you want morning ambience?  Do you want hard-hitting diva-queeny house?  Do you want to lay out on the couch and fall into nothingness for awhile?  Think of that track to get it started and Genius takes care of the rest by creating a playlist around that track.  F’ing brilliant.

As more people activate the Genius feature and contribute data to the database, its ability will only grow stronger.  I am hearing tracks I didn’t even know I owned…and I love it.  Tonight’s set at Science Club…will be partially driven by Genius.
