This is a response to a question about why a certain percentage of Americans cannot find the United States on a map….with my favorite parts in bold.
“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq and everywhere like such as and I believe that they should our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for us.” - Miss South Carolina.Â
This should be everyone’s motto for 2008, but I know it won’t be. I say this in context of my friends and family. It will be very difficult for them all not to be quibbling. (And is quibble really a word? I’ll have to remind myself to look it up.)
In any case…I have friends with heavy burdens right now. Whether it be money, stress, job, sickness, weight, love (or their perceived lack thereof), drugs (the bad kind), self esteem, family…there aren’t but two or three I can imagine that are in a good place. I have few without problems in their lives. But I love them still, very dearly, all of them. Even if they don’t know it. As much as I would snap my fingers and make it better for them, my issue sometimes…is getting sad that I can do little or nothing to help. Moral support only goes so far. And it’s draining on me, physically and mentally. I’m pretty thankful to be in a good place right now to level it all out. It just seems I am surrounded by despair lately….
A friend’s sister died. A friend’s grandmother may follow. (I’m pulling for her to last through the holiday.) A friend just got dumped. A friend just found out he contracted a virus. Another friend’s sister died. That friend has been stuck in the hospital 300 days out of this year. A friend disappeared. A friend lost his job. A friend will probably never know love unartificial.
I think it gets like that during the holiday season, though. Or maybe it’s a combination of haves-havenots with the cold and achey seasonal affective disorder. The longing in the air increases…along with the fakeness. Now don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of genuine people during the holiday season. But there are more of those who act fake. I can’t help but blame the media. And commercial peddlers. But we’re not going there today.
Did I mention that my parents are moving back to the UK? I don’t even want to begin imagining the chaos that will ensue when the movers come on Thursday. My dad must be at his wit’s end and my mom can’t be too far behind. The only happy one in that house right now has got to be the dog.
More later. The subway just arrived at Farragut North so it’s time to sign off. All I want for Christmas are cures for HIV, MS, Cancer, Stupidity and Diabetes. I’ll take 4 out of the 5 if I can’t have 5.
Tis the *cough* f’ing season *cough*…. If you haven’t had your cold yet this year, now *cough* is apparently the time. My new boss even came down with *gulp* strep. It’s gonna be a Zycam and vitamins morning. I knew my pressure felt off for the past couple days….
Do you know anyone who’s ever had the adrenaline shot to the heart?
Find out what he wants from you here.  Those of you who work with me will remember him as the recently departed (not dead), loud, tall Italian.
I can feel it. Today is going to be neutral!!! It’s about time!!!!! This after some arduousness. Boo (yay he has a link now) and I have been super busy boys lately, but it’s finally dying down.
In other news The Sean Show has reported the existence of new-fangled Portishead tracks on the interwebness. I am very excited. But I have already been teased once. About 6 or 7 years ago, someone put out a fake-me-out album under their name that sparked a press release to the effect of “not us, guys”…. I trust The Sean’s ear, though. If he says it’s the real deal, I’m ON IT.
So today’s music will be Portishead, Massive Attack, earlier darker Morcheeba with Skye singing, and some Little Dragon. for those of you who have yet to hear Little Dragon’s self titled album, I highly recommend you find it now. It’s been the album-de-SubwayState since July.
This is a test of the cell blogger.
