The April Experiment … (Day -1)

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

This is the morning I woke up and realized that my State-ID, work-ID and SmartPass are gone.  I am now carrying my passport as identification.  What timing?!!

It probably fell out in a cab.  I will be calling about it on Monday.  In other news, though…I got in my last bit of plastic swiping today to start out the fast of credit.  Thanks go to Sketchers, Rheul, Chrisafer, Bubbles and Boo.  But not to H&M for they had NOTHING I wanted.

The April Experiment … Day (-5)

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Today, I created the spreadsheet by which I will track all my my current debt and whittle back to nothing in the next few months.  April 1 is the first day I stop using the plastic cards.  A comparison will be provided when I finish running the numbers on how much money I saved.

The April Experiment … Day (-6)

Monday, March 26th, 2007

I am welcoming anyone I know to participate in this scheme.  Simply do what I do and make sure to keep a chronicle on your blog.  And if you don’t have a blog, go to blogger.com and make one.  That’s how I got started….

Intro

I am calling this The April Experiment.  The goals: save money, observe how withdrawl from card-swiping society affects me…chronicle it.  I will also be reinstituting the use of my magic finger-shaking-spreadsheet to track all of my bills and finances.  I’ll eventually provide a template to all of you.

By no means am I in dire need of cash, but I could be doing better at handling it lately.  I have a bigger salary now and I am not noticing the cash stack up.  In fact, I have noticed that I spend more money. :)   I’m not going out in Paris Hilton style or anything…but yeah, you get the idea.  We’ve all been there.

I will counter with the fact that my pay-raise came at the perfect time: when many necessary things needed purchasing.  I won’t go into the definition of necessary.  Just to say that…they were necessary and there was no way to avoid them.  Really.  And just as there were necessary purchases…there were also lots of completely-unnecessary purchases.  So I’m pluggin’ the hole for awhile.  Har har.

Preparation

In preparation for this experiment, I will re-create my magic spreadsheet.  I’ll also be hitting the grocery store to stock up on some of the necessary things.  A lot of this experiment came from the realization that I eat out way too often.  So I’ll be packin lunches during this experiment.  The rest is simple.  I will not be using any plastic cards to do anything…for all of April.  And I will report the results of this behavior in an end-of month report.

Notes

I will be leaving my revolving auto-pays in place.  They have a minimal impact on the outcome of this experiment, but will be reobserved if that is found to be less true than what I thought.

I will be taking cash out…in minimal amounts.  I am not by any means looking to substitue card-swiping with cash withdrawls and I am certainly not cutting my social life back to that of a sheltered 15 year old.  If I am out and want to grab a beer, I’m going to do it.  If I need cover, I’m going to have it.  But I am not going to go overboard with spending cash.  I may institue an allowance for the entire month.  We’ll see.

Oh My Damn…

I won’t spoil it for you…but the season finale of Battlestar Gallactica certainly packed in the surprises.  If you haven’t seen the show yet, I suggest you catch up.

You have…nine and a half months.  Nine and a half frackin’ months.

Still Alive

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I have been down with a nasty nasty throat bug for the past 3 days, but I am still alive.  My home (from now on called the Powerhouse) is now even. 3 females (the two cats and one dog) and 3 males (BooDaddy, The Rex Monday and myself).  It all started on Friday when Rex moved from Logan to Woodridge..in the rain and snow.  Boo was down with the cold all weekend.  It caught up to me on Monday.  Today is my first full day back at work.

Saturday, though…Boo and I made it out to Jimbo’s for the pre-Blowoff party.  As Jimbo mentioned, we didn’t actually go to Blowoff.  Wasn’t feelin’ it.  We opted for home instead.  Among the crowd at Jimbo’s … Mable, HairyBuggahSean, Ryan, Chrisafer, Bubbles, Clickboo, Clickboo’s man, and a few other people I hadn’t met before.  It was a nice time and good to get Boo out of the house into some fresh air.  And yes, TJ, I noticed you weren’t there…but considering which weekend it was, I didn’t question it.  So no…I didn’t ask after you even when Jimbo tried calling.

Sunday saw the innagural Powerhouse dinner.  After a very late morning of grocery shopping, Boo made London Broil and Rex made damn near the best taters ever ever.  Bubbles & Chrisafer made yummy cawwots and brought bread & wine.  Then we all watched Battlestar Gallactica and The Dresden Files before we all retired.

Monday….  Aint nothin like the taste of bronchial fluid in the mornin, yall.  You know the taste.  Not quite sinus, not quite milk phlegm.  Well anyway, it has been the taste in style since Monday and it isn’t  all gone yet.  I was laid out all day.  Between then and now I have downed copious (if that’s the word you want to use) amounts of Tylenol PM, Nyquil, Mucinex, Benadryl, Tramadol and liquids.  Mind you, liquids can come in the form of beer, wine, rum, vodka, water, oj and truckloads of tea.  But I’ll tell ya if there is anything better during a cold than a little red wine, show it to me.

Tuesday saw The Matrix Trilogy, learning more about my cat Merrick the Gargoyle…dinner with Chrisafer & Bubbles at Logan Tavern where Bubbles got the call from my employer *crossing fingers for another referral bonus….nowhammynowhammySTOP*, and a nice cap-off to the night with Little Miss Sunshine, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, and the original Legend of Zelda on my Wii.

I am introducing an Everyone Votes series on my site soon.  The questions are going to be fantastic at best, but I have my reasons for asking them.  Specifically to remind us that stranger things could happen…and to think about what if they did?

There is a hot Italian guy in the subway this morning…I almost feel back to my sex-crazed self again.
